Desire Paths Counseling is a solo therapy practice owned and operated by Emma Abed, LMSW in Ann Arbor, Michigan, launching in July 2026.

Hello! My name is Emma, and I am a therapist based in Ann Arbor. I am originally from California, but have lived in Michigan for over 10 years.

I graduated from the University of Michigan School of Social Work in 2022 with a dual master's degree in social work (MSW) and public health (MPH), and concentrations in interpersonal practice and health education. I have a background in psychology, sociology, gender/sexuality research, and sex education.

In my spare time, I like to read, go window shopping, make oat milk lattes, paint my nails, and hang out with my two cats (Frankie and Jolene). I look forward to getting to know you!

Desire paths, sometimes known as "desire lines" or "cow paths," are pathways created over time by human or animal traffic wearing into the natural landscape. They are usually the routes that people prefer, rather than the routes that have been established and paved. You might see them represent the shortest route between two points, a way to get around an obstacle, or maybe a path to a secret view off the side of a trail.

In the same way that we can create a new physical path by repeatedly walking a new route, we can also form new neural "pathways" in our brains through what we practice. 

You might have established or inherited some thoughts or habits that don't lead to helpful places. They might feel as unchangeable as, well, concrete. But, with intention and time, you can forge new ways of thinking, acting, and feeling that become stronger and more defined as you go. In the meantime, with less attention, those old pathways might fade away.
